Behind the Scenes of T.A.A. Double Feature: Empowering Artists and Elevating Community Theater

At Tony Aye Artistry (T.A.A.), community, artistic safety, and empowerment are at the heart of every program. One of the spotlight initiatives driving this mission forward is the Double Feature program, a concert-style theatrical showcase designed to challenge performers while bringing top-tier musical theater to diverse audiences.

What is Double Feature?

Double Feature is a single-night, concert-style performance featuring soundtracks from two  musical theater productions. Cast members volunteer their talents and take on the unique challenge of performing two distinct roles across both featured shows in a single evening.

The program doubles as an intensive artist development platform, allowing performers to sharpen their vocal techniques and deepen their acting skills through collaborative ensemble work.

Past and Upcoming Productions

Now in its third year and continuing into 2027, Double Feature has paired iconic shows for audiences:

 * Past Seasons: Six & Hamilton; The Wiz & Dreamgirls

 * 2026 Season: The Greatest Showman & RENT

 * 2027 Season: Waitress & Little Shop of Horrors

A Bridge Between Local Artists and Their Future Fans

To introduce new audiences to the arts and offer accessible family events (where content allows), T.A.A. typically offers at least one free showing of Double Feature at the Baltimore Artist Shed. It serves as a gathering space for existing theater lovers, Artist Shed supporters and newcomers alike.

Beyond Baltimore, Double Feature has expanded its footprint into Washington, D.C., with performances at Isle of Patmos Baptist Church. Through partnerships with organizations like New Renaissance Arts and Black Equity Baltimore, condensed presentations of Double Feature have been featured at local celebrations, including Indie Fest, H Street Festival, and the Black Equity ICON Awards.

Getting Involved as a Performer

Double Feature is structured to fit into working artists' schedules while offering structured growth. Rehearsals run monthly from March through September, leading up to fall performance dates. In addition to group rehearsals, artists train independently and can schedule dedicated one-on-one sessions with an Artist Representative for extra preparation.

Because this is a volunteer initiative supporting the non-profit organization, artists can track volunteer hours, mileage, and in-kind services to account for them on personal taxes. Performers are also actively promoted across T.A.A.’s social media channels and website to help position them for future professional opportunities.

Getting Involved as a Sponsor and Partner

Double Feature is designed to give as much back to the artists as it does to the community. Showing up to performances proves to local performers that their talents are valued.

For community members and organizations looking to directly invest in local talent, sponsorships and donations can be made through Zeffy.com. Your contributions help fund:

 * Artist stipends

 * Costuming and props

 * Costs associated with expanded performance opportunities
